Karla Caves

Just about 100 ka from Mumbai city in the Kamshet Malavali area, there are various ancient sites that are worth exploring if you are an archeology enthusiast… In this phone blog, sharing a visual essay on Karla caves. These buddhist caves were carved between 2nd century BC and 5th century AD period. Some of the carvings seemed to have Greek influence … Something that I need to check but looks possible since there was lot of trade interaction with Greece in that period. Especially the figurines on the columns are spectacular…

Meditating in the large chaityagruha must have been a fascinating experience. Inscriptions tell us something about the history of this cave complex… But more about that later. Beautifully carved men and women in the stone too have many stories to tell isn’t it?

Will keep sharing my visual journeys … Bon voyage …
