Fort Diu

December 6, 2017 by chinmayebhave

Monuments are traces of our history … they preserve our cultural memories … and not all memories are pleasant … The British, Dutch, French and Portuguese buildings in India are symbols of those colonial powers who once ruled India. But holding on to a bitter feeling about the past is not what a wise student of history or culture should do. We can enrich our understanding if we accept our past and present and learn objectively from it. When I […]

Taj Ul Masjid

November 27, 2017 by chinmayebhave

Name the biggest mosque in India… Many wrongly attribute this accolade to the Jama Masjid of Old Delhi. However, the winner is the Taj Ul Masjid which was constructed by the Shahjahan begum of the Bhopal and the construction continued during the reign of her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum in the 19th century. Paucity of funds and the hiatus due to the war of independence in 1857 the construction could not be completed … it was finally finished in 1985 […]

Rezang La, a tribute

November 18, 2017 by chinmayebhave

It was a frozen winter dawn! The Charlie company of the 13th Kumaon Regiment led by Major Shaitan Singh Bhati was keeping a calm vigil over the Rezang La pass … their objective was simple …. Hold on to Rezang La at any cost … not many days ago they were brought in from Leh and within couple of days these soldiers established their morchas along the 2km long ridge overlooking Rezang La pass. Shaitan Singh’s radio operator Ramachandra Yadav […]

Sarnath

November 17, 2017 by chinmayebhave

Lord Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath… a town few km away from the cultural hub of Hinduism and perhaps the birthplace of a civilization several centuries old. Not too far is Singhpur .. home to the 11th Teerthankar of the Jains … Shreyanshnath. Gautam Buddha called this place Isipatan and it is considered an important pilgrimage centre for the followers of Buddhist faith. Lets see a visual travelogue of Sarnath. After attaining enlightenment at Bodhgaya under a Banyan […]

November 16, 2017 by chinmayebhave

November 11, 2017 by chinmayebhave

Bishnupur & Rasmancha

November 11, 2017 by chinmayebhave

I was always fascinated by the temple architecture of Bengal and obviously Bishnupur was the main attraction. It is said that King Bir Hambir started building these monuments in the early period of the 17th century. He was a ruthless king who turned into a benevolent worshipper of Lord Vishnu after taking Vaishnava Diksha from Shri Chaitanya. He built the Ras Mancha in 1600 CE and later during the reign of king Raghunatha Bishnupur came of age as the centre […]

November 10, 2017 by chinmayebhave

The Old Fort

November 10, 2017 by chinmayebhave

Bada Darwaja or the great door greets us with geometric splendour … Jharokhas and chhatris are key aesthetic elements here. This is the sixth city of Delhi – Shergarh or Purana Qila. It is believed that the fort stands on what was known as the Indraprastha during the Mahabharat era. Sher Shah Suri destroyed the Dinapanah city built by Humayun to build his own capital city. During an excavation carried out in 1912-13 a village named Indrapat was cleared… later […]

World Heritage: Basilica of Bom Jesus

October 18, 2017 by chinmayebhave

The church of immaculate conception is a familiar vista in Panjim city. The first version stood on the same spot in 1541CE … later rebuilt in the 17th century. Football fever has added a new flavour to this quaint capital of the Goa state. However, we are going to travel about 10 km east of Panjim into old Goa to explore a world heritage site – The churches and convents of old Goa. The basilica of Bom Jesus or the […]
