Tombs are solemn sites … but if you look at the form … the geometry there is a lot to admire and smile about. On a hot summer day during IPL 2017 I decided to spend a morning before the game to explore the Qutb heritage park which has several tombs of the Qutb Shahi family. The first tomb we come across is in remembrance of Abdullah Qutb Shah (1626-72) It is one of its kind tomb complex with the […]

We all know the iconic Qutb Minar of Delhi … an architectural marvel from the Mamluk era. But let us go a bit ahead by about a hundred years and we find mention of another Minar. Not so tall and grand and not celebrated either … today located inside a quiet housing area in Hauz Khas enclave, this monument stands in fairly good condition. It is a 13th century monument built during Allauddin Khalji reign between 1290-1320CE. One can notice […]

About half a kilometre away from the red fort lies another majestic monument built in the Shahajahan era. If I am not wrong, it is a part of Shahajahanabad city designed by him. The friday mosque was built between 1650-56 and well it costed just about ten lac Rupees in the 17th century… In a comprehensive book on Delhi published by ASI and written by Urmila Varma, I found a rustic old image of the masjid. Three shapely domes and […]

Well my blog title is quite unfair …. because perhaps one of the most gorgeous stepwells in India does not need Bollywood endorsement to become an important monument! But to be fair to Bollywood it is an ignored gem.Amir Khan’s PK and the recent Sridevi thriller MOM … both feature Ugrasen ki baoli on the big screen. Many of my Delhi dosts were not aware of this stepwell though it is right in the heart of New Delhi city… perhaps […]

As Indraprastha in the age of Mahabharata it was a city ruled by Pandavas. Painted grey ware found in excavations near the site of Purana Qila points at the long continuity of civilization in the national capital region. From Mauryas in the third century BC to the modern Republic of India, Delhi or Dhillika has been ruled by several dynasties. From Tomar Rajputs like King Anangapal to the British who shifted India’s capital to Delhi from Kolkata in 1911 every […]

I have spent three action packed seasons with the Sony IPL production team and was fortunate enough to interact with Archana Vijaya … Without her the extraa innings experience would be incomplete… It is fun to have an impromptu photo session with her after long day of cricket shoots … Well Archie is always fresh for the camera!
